Pain Division

“Alice King,” I said with the enthusiasm of a funeral dirge.

The woman’s eyes kept their amused glow as she looked me up and down like a slab of beef. She stepped closer to the counter and leaned forward. Her elbows rested on the counter as a single finger made a small swirl on the countertop.

“My reputation precedes me. I fear you have me at a disadvantage, for I don’t know your name,” Alice said with such scaly smoothness, I expected a forked tongue to stick out and sniff at the air.

I glanced over at the four, rather large “men” behind her. They were big, like bouncer on steroids big, and just as wide. They truly looked barely human. If they didn’t have some kind of magical disguise mentioned by the agents, I would swear they were ogres. I got the impression she had them follow her around to up the intimidation factor. Little did she know, I wasn’t cognitively aware enough to be intimidated by such tactics, or so I tell myself when I take showers by myself.

Vanessa was by my side, her expression neutral, but her eyes alert. From the bar, the gentle murmur of innocent conversations floated out, mixed with the soothing tunes from the jukebox. Despite all of that, there was a new tension in the air. It grew thicker by the second as a famous criminal was standing before me, sweet as a pie filled with scorpions.

“Brandon Ferryman, Manager for the Coffin Hotel,” I stated.

Alice gave me a single nod. “Well, Mr. Ferryman, happy to meet you. I haven’t been this way in a long time. I believe there was another manager before, Hilda, was her name? She was very accommodating, in many different ways. Tell me, Mr. Ferryman, will you be as accommodating?”

I couldn’t stop my eyes from narrowing. She knows exactly who I am and what the hotel is about. She was playing coy and innocent, trying to find out what she could, possibly to use it against me or the hotel. I could feel it in my bones.

“It depends on what you’re looking for.” I said as I eyed her.

Alice smiled brighter. “It’s simple really. We need three rooms for an extended stay. We’ve been on the road for some time and since I’ve heard so much about your hotel, we thought we would take some time to rest and relax.”

“Three? I thought there would be more, considering you’re famous,” I said plainly.

“Don’t you mean infamous?” Alice grinned before lifting her hand and twirling a lock of her own hair with a finger. “I can understand your hesitation, and the chilly reception. But I can assure you, I’m not here for any trouble. The road can be tiresome and a real bed will be welcomed.”

I opened the registry book and looked for a blank page. “Is this one of those times where you only want three rooms, but are going to have more and more people show up? Because if it is, we don’t run the hotel that way,” I warned.
